Semester I

CIS 506: Information Management

  • Information Management as a subject involved a variety of case studies and showed how critical thinking helps with asking the right questions.

  • Working in a team, respecting one’s point of view, and communicating clearly were highly emphasized.

  • Applying decision-making and problem-solving skills ensured high-quality deliverables.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication, and time management.

CIS 525: Strategic Value of IT

  • Strategic Value of IT taught how important a role IT plays in business.

  • IT Valuation and Costs, IT Portfolio, IT Governance, IT sourcing, and innovation were covered in detail in the course.

  • Financial approaches such as Return on Investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV), Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), and Real Options were explained with calculations and real-life examples.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, problem-solving, financial knowledge.

CIS 541: Business Data Visualization

  • Business Data Visualization focused on storytelling with data on Tableau.

  • Innovative and creative approaches to maximize understanding of data insights and reduce cognitive burden helped simplify the complexity of data for the business side

  • A fun course that covered significant topics such as chart types and when they should ideally be used, the gap instinct, and Gestalt principles of visual perception.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, story-telling, decision-making.

CIS 512: Business Intelligence

  • Business Intelligence focused on how technology helps transform business with data.

  • Practical examples, open-ended questions, and inspiring guest lecturers encouraged high-quality deliverables.

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure to build a data model, and understand how parameter tuning helps achieve a business goal.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, analytical thinking.

Semester II

CIS 508: Data Mining I

  • Data Mining involved learning data mining approaches and hands-on Python training.

  • Supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, ensemble learning, and model deployment were the focus of this subject.

  • Understanding industry requirements and clients to provide value to a business by analyzing data lay at the core to succeed in this course.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, analytical thinking, attention to detail, storytelling.

CIS 540: Information Security & Control

  • Information Security & Control involved policies and processes with frameworks like NIST, COBIT, and ISO.

  • Cyber threat simulations helped in making decisions by analyzing risk-mitigating strategies to help minimize risk.

  • Tabletop exercises were performed to recognize the body language and culture of the environment while building a contingency plan.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, adaptability, communication.

CIS 591: Big Data Analytics

  • Big Data Analytics as a course involves dealing with unstructured data and exploring strategies behind big data to gain a competitive advantage.

  • To better understand these strategies, a social media analytics project posed interesting research questions regarding problem-solving and analytical approaches

  • Gained an experience in a full analytical pipeline and navigating big data challenges.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, communication, brainstorming, collaboration.

CIS 565: AI & Business

  • AI and Business focused on how AI has transformed all businesses and discussed whether AI will replace humans or not.

  • Analyzed case studies to identify opportunities that AI provides and when it can get challenging to navigate innovation difficulties.

  • Hands-on Python assignments on Spyder to explore how knowing the relationship between data parameters can provide value to a business.

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, analytical thinking, emotional intelligence, teamwork.

Semester III - Summer 2023 (May 2023 - July 2023)

CIS 560: IT Services and Project Management

  • Walked through each phase of a project from initiating - planning – executing - monitoring & controlling – closing, with multiple different aspects of learning including activities, group discussions, simulations, and case studies.

  • This course was unique and full of learning experiences, and activities comprising of self-organizing teams, constructing a work breakdown structure and risk matrix, applying the Earned Value Management technique, and understanding how the Agile-Kanban principle works

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, teamwork, leadership presentation, asking the right questions, communication.

CIS 575: Emerging Technologies

  • Emerging Technologies involved knowledge sharing on advanced technologies and brainstorming on their potential effect.

  • An extremely informative course with the implementation of a transformative idea for a current business using a disruptive technology - both technical details and financials play a role

  • This course involved high quality discussions and analyzing and applying the impact of sustaining and disruptive technological innovation principles on the adoption

  • Skills developed: Critical thinking, communication, brainstorming, active listening, giving constructive feedback.
